Oil Painting-Full Course
Experience:
A structured online course designed to take you through the fundamentals of oil painting and gradually towards developing your own way of working.
The course is divided into three progressive parts. You’ll begin by getting familiar with oil painting materials and understanding light through monochrome painting. You’ll then move into colour mixing and oil painting techniques, supported by examples from art history. In the final part, you’ll work with creative prompts and begin developing your own approach and visual language.
Approach:
The course combines practical demonstrations, guided exercises, art-historical references, and independent practice.
You’ll learn by making rather than simply watching. Each part introduces new concepts and techniques that build on what you learned previously, giving you a solid foundation while leaving room to experiment and develop your own interests.
Structure:
-
Part 1: Oil Colour & Light
Begin by getting to know oil colour and the different mediums used with it. You’ll learn how the materials behave and how to work with them effectively. You’ll then explore monochrome painting as a way to understand light, value, form, and contrast before introducing colour. These exercises help you develop a stronger eye for observing and translating light into paint.
-
Part 2: Colour Mixing & Oil Painting Techniques
Move into colour and learn how to mix and control oil colours to create a wider range of tones and relationships.
You’ll explore different oil painting techniques through practical exercises, with examples from art history showing how artists have approached colour, layering, brushwork, texture, and composition. Looking at these different approaches will help you understand not only how techniques work, but why artists use them.
-
Part 3: Prompts & Developing Your Own Technique
In the final part, the focus shifts from learning established techniques to finding your own way of using them.
You’ll work with a series of creative prompts designed to encourage experimentation and original thinking. Through these exercises, you’ll explore different possibilities, make your own artistic decisions, and begin developing techniques that feel natural to your practice. The aim is not to follow one fixed style, but to give you the tools and confidence to start creating work that feels genuinely your own.
