Portfolio Building-Full Course

Experience:

A structured course for experienced painters and artists who want to develop a strong, cohesive body of work for future exhibitions, art school applications, art prizes, or artist residencies.

Rather than focusing on learning a specific medium or technique, the course focuses on developing ideas, creating a series, and building a portfolio with a clear artistic direction. You’ll have the opportunity to work from your own ideas or explore suggested themes and gradually turn them into a meaningful body of work.

Approach:

The course combines professional guidance, independent artistic practice, creative prompts, assignments, and individual feedback.

You’ll learn how to move from an initial idea or theme towards a developed series of artworks. Along the way, you’ll consider how individual works relate to each other, how to develop consistency while allowing for experimentation, and how to make your portfolio communicate your interests and artistic direction. The focus is on helping you develop your own voice rather than following a fixed style or formula.

Structure:

  • Part 1: Finding Your Theme & Developing Ideas

Begin by identifying the subjects, questions, interests, or themes you want to explore through your work.

You can bring your own ideas or choose from suggested themes and creative prompts. You’ll learn how to develop an initial concept into a direction that can support a series of artworks, rather than treating each piece as a separate work.

  • Part 2: Developing an Art Series

Turn your ideas into a connected body of work. You’ll create multiple artworks around your chosen theme, exploring different compositions, approaches, materials, and visual possibilities.

Throughout the process, you’ll receive guidance from professional artists and use assignments to push your ideas further. The aim is to create a series that feels connected while giving you enough freedom to experiment and discover new directions.

  • Part 3: Building Your Portfolio

Bring your artworks together and start shaping them into a coherent portfolio.

You’ll reflect on the work you’ve created, identify connections and recurring ideas, and consider how the series can be presented for different purposes—including art school applications, exhibitions, art prizes, and residencies.

A private online feedback session gives you the opportunity to discuss your portfolio, receive personalised feedback, and consider your next steps as an artist.
